GEN reports on novel tools for deciphering biological networks

(Mary Ann Liebert, Inc./Genetic Engineering News) Systems biology scientists from diverse areas of research are developing a range of methods to model pathways, interpret data, and derive therapeutic targets from biological networks, reports Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology News. A major focal point of much of the work is to characterize the effects of drugs on the activity of large, complex biological networks.

Turning On Cell-cell Communication Wipes Out Staph Biofilms

Researchers have succeeded in wiping out established biofilms of Staphylococcus aureus by hijacking one of the bacteria's own regulatory systems. Although the discovery is not ready for clinical application, the findings offer insight into a dispersal mechanism for staph biofilms and might help identify therapeutic targets.

Recent discoveries about the role of stem cells in cancer have altered the landscape of cancer research. As scientists learn more their cancer-initiating properties, stem cells are emerging as potential therapeutic targets for many types of cancers. Studies presented at the 2008 Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research, April 12-16, report stem cell discoveries related to pancreatic, bladder, ovarian, and breast cancer and glioma.

Identification Of BCAR Genes Relevant For Breast Cancer Progress...

Dutch researchers report identifying a set of seven genes responsible for drug resistance and aggressiveness in the most common form of breast cancer. These genes, some of which are novel, could provide therapeutic targets for personalized treatment of breast cancer and, possibly, for prevention of disease, they say. These genes are found in estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer, which investigators say is usually more treatable than breast cancer that is not fueled by estrogen.

Physical Activity Delays Onset Of Huntington's In Mouse Model

The simple act of running in an exercise wheel delays the onset of some symptoms of Huntington's disease in a mouse model of the fatal human disorder according to new research. These findings add insights into the pathogenesis of the disease and suggest possible preventive therapeutic targets.

Low Micro-RNA Level Linked To High Gene Activity In AML

A new study suggests that acute myeloid leukemia (AML) may occur in part because abnormally low levels of a particular microRNA result in the over-activity of two genes important to the disease. The research involved 85 patients with AML and gene mutations called NPM1, seen in about one-third of adult AML cases, and FLT3. The findings suggest new therapeutic targets for treating the disease and should improve the understanding of AML.
