Mouse Model Of Prion Disease Mimics Diverse Symptoms Of Human Di...

A comprehensive mouse model of inherited prion disease exhibits cognitive, motor and neurophysiological deficits that bear a striking resemblance to the symptoms experienced by patients with the human version of "mad cow disease," Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. The research, published in the journal Neuron, provides exciting insight into the mechanism of disease and may lead to the development of new therapeutic strategies for this devastating neurodegenerative disorder.

An experimental anti-cancer drug can prevent -- and even reverse -- potentially fatal cardiovascular damage in a mouse model of progeria, a rare genetic disorder that causes the most dramatic form of human premature aging researchers have reported.

Researchers have developed a new mouse model of Costello syndrome (CS) -- an inherited disorder that affects many parts of the body, causing multiple symptoms; for example, effects on the brain and heart result in mental retardation and structural heart defects, respectively.

A new study in mice suggests molecules in plants may have beneficial effects on Alzheimer's disease. Researchers administered molecules called flavonoids, which are found in certain fruits and vegetables, to a mouse model genetically programmed to develop Alzheimer's disease.

Clearer Day For Gene Therapy: New Vector Carries Big Genes Linke...

For some inherited diseases, one barrier to successful gene therapy is that a commonly used vector (package into which the curative gene is placed) cannot accommodate the large size of the curative gene. However, a newly developed vector derived from the AAV5 form of adeno-associated virus has been used to successfully carry large genes into cells and to improve eye function in a mouse model of an inherited disease causing progressive loss of sight.

Biologists Build A Better Mouse Model For Cancer Research

Metastasis, the spread of cancer from a primary site to other tissues and organs in the body, is the leading cause of death among cancer patients. Without an animal model that consistently reproduces human-like metastasis, researchers have relied on individual cancer patients to assess new therapies. Researchers now have a new mouse model they used it to make a new finding about the role of macrophage cells in the spread of cancer.

Physical Activity Delays Onset Of Huntington's In Mouse Model

The simple act of running in an exercise wheel delays the onset of some symptoms of Huntington's disease in a mouse model of the fatal human disorder according to new research. These findings add insights into the pathogenesis of the disease and suggest possible preventive therapeutic targets.

New Drug Protects Nerve Cells From Damage In Mice

Individuals with multiple sclerosis develop progressive neurological disability that is thought to be caused by degradation of nerve cells. A new study has characterized an agent that protected nerve cells from damage in culture and markedly reduced disease progression in a mouse model of MS. The authors of the study therefore suggested that agents similar to the one they characterized might provide a new approach to treating individuals with MS and other neurodegenerative disorders.

Bipolar Disorder: Manic Mouse Made With One Gene Missing

Bipolar Disorder (BPD or manic-depressive illness) is one of the most serious of all mental disorders, affecting millions of individuals worldwide. Affected individuals alternate between states of deep depression and mania. Now, a mouse model of the disease has been developed. Researchers found that the glutamate receptor 6 (GluR6) gene is associated with bipolar disorder. Mice that were missing the GluR6 gene underwent a series of tests designed to approximate the symptoms of mania.
