Researchers have identified two potential molecular markers that may predict outcomes for patients with stomach cancer, one of the most common and fatal cancers worldwide.

Stomach Bug Appears To Protect Kids From Asthma, Says New Study

ScienceDaily  Sat, 07/19/2008 - 20:00

A long-time microbial inhabitant of the human stomach may protect children from developing asthma, according to a new study among more than 7,000 subjects.

Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium that has co-existed with humans for at least 50,000 years, may lead to peptic ulcers and stomach cancer.

Yet, kids between the ages of 3 and 13 are nearly 59 percent less likely to have asthma if they carry the bug, the researchers report.

Early treatment of stomach infection may prevent cancer

EurekAlert! - Chemistry, Physics and Materials Sciences  Wed, 04/30/2008 - 23:00

(American Association for Cancer Research) Based on research using a new mouse model of gastritis and stomach cancer, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology say that prompt treatment of Helicobacter pylori infections reverses damage to the lining of the stomach that can lead to cancer.

Primary Driver Of Stomach Cancer Development Identified

ScienceDaily  Thu, 04/24/2008 - 10:00

Scientists have discovered what appears to be the primary driver of tumor development in the stomach. Inhibiting the signaling cascade initiated by the IL-11 protein prevented the development of inflammation, hyperplasia (an abnormal increase in the number of cells) and tumor formation in pre-clinical models of gastric cancer.
