METHANE EMISSIONS FROM THE NATURAL GAS INDUSTRY VOLUME 8: EQUIPM...

Recent Science Inventory records from the EPA  Wed, 10/08/2008 - 15:35

The 15-volume report summarizes the results of a comprehensive program to quantify methane (CH4) emissions from the U.S. natural gas industry for the base year.

The objective was to determine CH4 emissions from the wellhead and ending downstream at the customer's meter.

The accuracy goal was to determine these emissions within +/-0.5% of natural gas production for a 90% confidence interval.

For the 1992 base year, total CH4 emissions for the U.S. natural gas industry was 314 +/- 105 Bscf (6.04 +/- 2.01 Tg).

Recent Science Inventory records from the EPA  Wed, 09/10/2008 - 09:34

There is no simple answer to the question ?are materials from bio-based feedstocks environmentally, and socially, preferable??

Bioenergy as an alternative energy source might be effective in reducing fossil fuel use, slowing global warming effects, and providing increased revenue for the farming community, but its production may contribute to other aspects, such as degraded soil and water quality and land use changes.

This brings into question how we define and measure ?sustainability.?
