Biosensor for measuring stress in cells

EurekAlert! - Chemistry, Physics and Materials Sciences  Thu, 05/15/2008 - 23:00

(Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres) Reactive oxygen compounds, including the well-known "free radicals," have an oxidation effect and, thereby, damage cells.

However, at low levels, they also regulate key life processes. Scientists at the German Cancer Research Center have developed a highly sensitive biological measuring system for determining the oxidation state of living cells in real time.

ScienceDaily  Tue, 04/22/2008 - 01:00

High blood levels of vitamin D protect post-menopausal women from breast cancer. This connection has been confirmed by research of the German Cancer Research Center.

It also shows that a particular gene variant of the vitamin D receptor is associated with an elevated breast cancer risk if the tumor has receptors for the female sex hormone estrogen.
