Man's best friend recruited in the hunt for disease genes

EurekAlert! - Chemistry, Physics and Materials Sciences  Wed, 10/15/2008 - 23:00

(European Science Foundation) For centuries man has had a uniquely close relationship with dogs -- as a working animal, for security and, perhaps most importantly, for companionship.

Now, dogs are taking on a new role -- they are helping in the hunt for genetic mutations that lead to diseases in humans.

Significant Benefits In Non-small-cell Lung Cancer From Customiz...

ScienceDaily  Mon, 09/15/2008 - 14:00

Lung cancer patients whose tumors carry specific genetic mutations can achieve significantly longer survival when treated with targeted therapies such as erlotinib, researchers report.

Different Mutations In Single Gene Suggest Parkinson's Is Primar...

ScienceDaily  Fri, 04/18/2008 - 01:00

Scientists are now rounding out the notion that Parkinson's disease is largely caused by inherited genetic mutations that pass through scores of related generations over hundreds, if not thousands of years.

These genetic influences, which can be small but additive, or large and causative, overturn common beliefs that the neurodegenerative disease mostly occurs in a random fashion or is due to undetermined environmental factors.

Discovery Offers New Avenues To Understanding An Aggressive Form...

ScienceDaily  Tue, 04/15/2008 - 13:00

Researchers have discovered evidence that a series of genetic mutations work together to initiate most cases of an aggressive and often-fatal form of acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Infection With A Mutated HIV Strain Results In Better Survival

ScienceDaily  Fri, 03/21/2008 - 13:00

Persons infected with a mutated HIV strain, transmitted from those who have the genetic advantages to control the virus, results in improved survival according to a recent study by South African researchers.

The study looked for genetic mutations in the infecting virus in 24 newly infected people in Durban, South Africa.

Deadly Genetic Disease Prevented Before Birth In Zebrafish

ScienceDaily  Fri, 03/21/2008 - 04:00

By injecting a customized "genetic patch" into early stage fish embryos, researchers were able to correct a genetic mutation so the embryos developed normally.

The research could lead to the prevention of up to one-fifth of birth defects in humans caused by genetic mutations, according to the scientists involved in the study.

Genetic Analysis Reveals Range Of Rett Syndrome

ScienceDaily  Thu, 03/13/2008 - 10:00

The first comprehensive analysis of the clinical effects of genetic mutations involved in Rett syndrome will enable affected families to receive a more accurate indication of their child's prognosis.

Electronic Structure Of DNA Revealed For First Time

ScienceDaily  Mon, 03/10/2008 - 10:00

Utilizing a technique that combines low temperature measurements and theoretical calculations, scientists have revealed for the first time the electronic structure of single DNA molecules.

The knowledge of the electronic properties of DNA is an important issue in many scientific areas from biochemistry to nanotechnology -- for example in the study of DNA damage by ultraviolet radiation that may cause the generation of free radicals and genetic mutations.
