Alternative Fossil Fuels Have Economic Potential, Study Shows

ScienceDaily  Wed, 10/08/2008 - 13:15

Alternative sources of fossil fuels such as oil sands and coal-to-liquids have significant economic promise, but the environmental consequences must also be considered, according to a new study.

Halting methane squanderlust

EurekAlert! - Chemistry, Physics and Materials Sciences  Tue, 05/20/2008 - 23:00

(DOE/Pacific Northwest National Laboratory) The pipes that rise from oil fields, topped with burning flames of natural gas, waste fossil fuels and dump carbon dioxide into the air.

In new work, researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and China's Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics have identified the structure of a catalytic material that can turn methane into a safe and easy-to-transport liquid.

The insight lays the foundation for converting excess methane into a variety of useful fuels and chemicals.

'Revolutionary' Carbon Dioxide Maps Zoom In On Greenhouse Gas So...

ScienceDaily  Tue, 04/08/2008 - 10:00

A new, high-resolution, interactive map of US carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels has found that the emissions aren't all where we thought.

The maps and system, called Vulcan, show carbon dioxide emissions at more than 100 times more detail than was available before.

Until now, data on carbon dioxide emissions were reported monthly at the level of an entire state. The Vulcan model examines carbon dioxide emissions at local levels on an hourly basis.

Nuclear Power Not Efficient Enough To Replace Fossil Fuels, Stud...

ScienceDaily  Wed, 03/05/2008 - 07:00

Nuclear energy must increase by more than 10% each year from 2010 to 2050 to meet all future energy demands and replace fossil fuels, but this is an unsustainable prospect.

According to a new report such a large growth rate will require a major improvement in nuclear power efficiency otherwise each new power plant will simply cannibalize the energy produced by earlier nuclear power plants.

Carbon capture strategy could lead to emission-free cars

EurekAlert! - Chemistry, Physics and Materials Sciences  Sun, 02/10/2008 - 23:00

Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have developed a strategy to capture, store and eventually recycle carbon from vehicles.

Georgia Tech researchers envision a zero emission car, and a transportation system completely free of fossil fuels.
