(University of Manchester) The likelihood of people dying because their medication has a side effect that affects the electrical activity of the heart is being reduced -- thanks to a better understanding of why this happens and the development of tests to predict it.

New data have now revealed that fever can trigger life-threatening changes in the electrical activity in the heart of patients with LQT-2.

A team of European scientists has deliberately triggered electrical activity in thunderclouds for the first time, according to a new paper in the latest issue of Optics Express, the Optical Society's open-access journal.

They did this by aiming high-power pulses of laser light into a thunderstorm.
