(Society for General Microbiology) Scientists studying arsenic pollution have discovered a living sensor that can spot contamination.

They have also discovered new bacteria that can clean up arsenic spills even in previously untreatable cold areas, microbiologists heard today (Monday Sept. 8, 2008) at the Society for General Microbiology's Autumn meeting being held this week at Trinity College, Dublin.

Mussels to determine how much contamination is in the ports

EurekAlert! - Chemistry, Physics and Materials Sciences  Tue, 07/29/2008 - 23:00

(Elhuyar Fundazioa) The research Project led by Dr. Nestor Etxebarria of the University of the Basque Country is aimed at monitoring contamination of ports.

Mussels are used to measure the levels of contaminants as they feed by filtering water and so accumulate any contaminant substances in their organs.
