(University of Maryland) In a recent study that combined math and medicine, researchers have shown that patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia may be cured of the disease with an optimally timed cancer vaccine, where the timing is determined based on their own immune response.

Combining math and medicine to treat leukemia

EurekAlert! - Mathematics and Statistics  Wed, 06/18/2008 - 23:00

(Public Library of Science) Researchers have produced a mathematical model that may lead to the development of an optimally-timed vaccine for chronic myelogenous leukemia.

The model takes into account the natural anti-leukemia response in patients that are treated with the drug imatinib.

This approach provides insights on how to improve the treatment of leukemia patients. Details are published June 20 in the open-access journal PLoS Computational Biology.
