'Fish Technology' Draws Renewable Energy From Slow Water Current...

ScienceDaily  Sun, 11/23/2008 - 17:30

Slow-moving ocean and river currents could be a new, reliable and affordable alternative energy source. Engineers have made a machine that works like a fish to turn potentially destructive vibrations in fluid flows into clean, renewable power.

There is no simple answer to the question ?are materials from bio-based feedstocks environmentally, and socially, preferable??

Bioenergy as an alternative energy source might be effective in reducing fossil fuel use, slowing global warming effects, and providing increased revenue for the farming community, but its production may contribute to other aspects, such as degraded soil and water quality and land use changes.

This brings into question how we define and measure ?sustainability.?

Solar Collector Could Change Asphalt Roads Into Renewable Energy...

ScienceDaily  Thu, 08/14/2008 - 12:00

Scientists have found a way to use asphalt's heat-soaking property for an alternative energy source by developing a solar collector that could turn roads and parking lots into ubiquitous -- and inexpensive sources of electricity and hot water.

Alternative energy hits the road

EurekAlert! - Chemistry, Physics and Materials Sciences  Sun, 08/10/2008 - 23:00

(Worcester Polytechnic Institute) A research team at Worcester Polytechnic Institute has found a way to use asphalt's heat-soaking property for an alternative energy source by developing a solar collector that could turn roads and parking lots into ubiquitous -- and inexpensive sources of electricity and hot water.

The research will be presented at the annual symposium of the International Society for Asphalt Pavements in Zurich, Switzerland on Monday, Aug. 18, 2008.

Questioning Nuclear Power's Ability To Forestall Global Warming

ScienceDaily  Tue, 04/22/2008 - 13:00

Rising energy and environmental costs may prevent nuclear power from being a sustainable alternative energy source in the fight against global warming, according to a new study.
