In 1989, the combined annual production of vinyl acetate by five facilities was 2.8 billion pounds. Vinyl acetate is heavily used in industry, mainly in the manufacture of adhesives, paints, textile and paper products; it is widely used in the paperboard and coating industries, as well as in the manufacture of vinyl floor tile.

Domestic manufacturing processes and commercial uses resulted in releases of 6.6 million pounds of vinyl acetate to the environment in 1987.
